If anyone knows who wrote the original version of this quote please let me know, I’d love to credit them. This poster was created while listening to Brand New’s DAISY record. Love it.

Circa Survive / Act Appalled

I was listening to a co-worker’s iTunes today at work and I was pleasantly surprised when I found At The Drive-In’s “Vaya” record in there. And then, when that record ended I took an even stranger trip down audio memory lane when Circa Survive’s first record “Juturna” came on. “Juturna” will always be one of my favorite records, not only is it sonically beautiful, but it has the kind of lyrics that are relevant to your life in a different way every time you hear them. This lyric stuck out today to me, and I really don’t know what it actually means, but today, it means something awesome to me.

Is the grammar improper? I don’t know. Do I care? No. Is it an incomplete thought? Probably. That’s why it’s wonderful just the way it is. Pick up “Juturna” if you don’t have it already.

Modest Mouse

Modest Mouse improved on an awesome quote and put it in an awesome song, “Paper Thin Walls.” If you don’t own The Moon and Antarctica I highly suggest you pick it up. I cannot believe this record is over ten years old already. Wow. Time flies.

With great power comes…

I saw the Spider-Man musical, Turn Off The Dark, last night, and I have to say that I thought it was fantastic. When all of Hollywood is scrambling to make everything 3-D even when it doesn’t need to be, this play is as three-dimensional and real as it can get. There’s an old saying that says “You don’t know how far you can go until you’ve gone too far,” and that’s what I think happened with this play. They pushed the boundaries of theater like no musical had even done before, and in the process, they broke a couple of bones. I for one have to say I think it was well worth it.

My favorite part of the play was a particular group of “geeks” who pseudo-narrate the entire play. Their witty banter and perfect comedic timing moved the evening along flawlessly. Mat Devine, who plays one of the geeks, is from the band Kill Hannah, and he lights up the Broadway stage even more than the one he’s used to (sweet Black Flag pin, Mat).

If you’re a comic book fan, a Spider-Man fan, or if you are smart enough to appreciate ambition and creativity in action, check out Turn Off The Dark.

*Note: No one was hurt during my Monday night showing, and for the record, no Spider-Men have died during the play.
